Are Cell Phones Safe For Your Children?

Some scientists are urging parents to reconsider giving their children mobile phones. In fact, the British-based National Radiological Protection Board has suggested children younger than age 8 should not be given a cellular phone as it risks exposing their young bodies to harmful radiation.

According to a University of Washington scientist: 70 percent to 80 percent of the energy emitted from the antenna of a mobile phone is absorbed in the head. This expert was particularly concerned about kids using mobiles because their younger skulls -- contrary to popular opinion -- are thinner and their growing brains may be much more susceptible to radiation exposure.

And because children could potentially use mobiles longer than their parents, slow-growing brain tumors could show up sooner.

Lack of Scientific Evidence

It is still unclear how your body responds to cell phone radiation. The FDA has explained that in regard to the safety and use of cell phones by children, scientific evidence does not show a danger of users of wireless communication devices including children.

While science may not map out the dangers cell phones pose, a number of other sources may ...

One study suggested that people who use a cell phone for at least 10 years might increase their risk of developing acoustic neuroma -- a benign tumor on the auditory nerve that carries sound from the ear to the brain. Despite the lack of solid evidence that cell phones are dangerous, members of the scientific community explain that mobile phones simply haven't been in use long enough and that more clinical data is needed.

Dr. Mercola's Comment:

Media headlines seem to jump back and forth between reporting on the dangers of cell phones and then on their safety. In case you have forgotten about this serious issue, consider re-reading my extensive review of an article published in Lancet on this very subject five years ago.

Because of these issues, along with other known effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs), I used to discourage cell phone use entirely. Then, with the advent of headsets, my once stringent recommendations relaxed a little, as headsets do help to decrease your EMF exposure. However, while using a hands-free device has been found to reduce radiation from cell phones, emissions can still travel up the headset wire and into the head.

Many of you rely on your cell phone as an essential part of your life so not using a cell phone is not even a remote possibility. But it would seem prudent to restrict the use of cell phones in your kids. If you are unable to do that I can't urge you enough to either use your cell phone on speakerphone or get a SAFE headset.

It is important to know that virtually every headset out there may actually increase the radiation exposure to your brain by serving as an antenna. If you or your children use a cell phone it is vital that you protect them with simple and inexpensive new technology that can transform your dangerous headset into an oasis safe from dangerous cell phone radiation.
